  • The Sacred Pipe of the T'salagi (The People)

Most all Nations have stories about the 'Sacred Pipe'. What many people refer to it as The Peace Pipe. Which is an incorrect Hollywood thought shown in the old west movies and cartoons. The Sacred pipe is to the Native Americans as the cross is to christian cultures.

The pipe, in one form or another, has come to most cultures around the world. Every group has used the pipe in one way or another and has stories of how they came to have it. The Lakota tell the story of the White Buffalo woman and how she first brought the pipe to them.
Just as the Tsalagi have this story.

It is not important how the pipe first arrived. Or who it came to first as all nations see themselves as the first to have this gift from creator. What is important is that the pipe is revered as a sacred item and also important is that it did come from The Creator. What is most important is that pipe was brought to all men of this world, for we all must share this world.
Long ago, but not long after the world was new, a tribe of red skinned people came to live on the lands which are around The Blue Smoke Mountains.

At this time, the animals of the world still talked to men and taught them how to live on and care for the land. These people were called " Ani Yun Wiya " or the One True People. In this tribe lived a brave warrior woman.

She was called 'Arrow Woman'. Arrow Woman was taught to use the bow, the spear and the knife. Even though it was a man's job to hunt and fight, Arrow Woman could shoot straighter with the bow than any man, she could throw the knife so as split a branch no bigger than your thumb and she could throw the spear into eye of a hawk in flight.
Because of all this, no man would tell her to be like a woman.

One day while on a hunt, Arrow Woman came upon the tracks of Yona the bear. She saw blood on the ground and knew him to be wounded so she followed his tracks. High into the mountains she followed. Soon she came to a place that she did not know. It was in this place, a place known only to the animals that she finally saw Yona the bear. He had a deep cut in his side and she saw him bowing down in prayer. She saw him bowing toward a large field of tall grass and speaking words that she had not heard before. Suddenly, the grass shimmered and became a lake. Arrow Woman saw Yona dive into the water. After a time he emerged from the water, his side was completely healed. Yona then saw Arrow Woman and walked to her. Yona told her, "this is the sacred lake of the animals. It is called, 'Atagahi' and it's location is known only to the animals. It is where we come for healing and strength. You are the first man creature to see the sacred lake.
You must never tell your kind of it's location for it is the home of 'The Great Uktena'. With these words Yona the Bear turned and walked into the woods and disappeared.

Arrow Woman was tired after following Yona all day so she decided to rest a while by this lake. She built a small fire and sat down to eat a meal that she had brought with her. She took a drink of the water from the lake and felt instantly refreshed. She was amazed, she felt strong as Yan'si the Buffalo. She felt as if she run faster than Coga the Raven could fly.

The woods were quiet, Unole the wind was sleeping, Nvda the sun was shinning bright but was not hot, the surface of the lake was completely calm, Arrow Woman began to get sleepy.

It was at this time that she saw 'Uktena', she had been told of him when she was a child but no one in her tribe ever claimed to have seen him. High above the water he raised his great serpent's head, the jewel in his forehead glistening.
He began to move toward her. Arrow Woman grabbed up her spear and stood up to face the great creature coming to her, standing proud, showing no fear, the way any warrior should. She raised her spear and prepared to strike the huge beast.

Uktena stopped a short distance from her. He smiled, his mouth was larger than a man was tall and full of teeth longer than man's forearm. He spoke to the brave woman on the bank of his lake. To her he said, "Put down your weapons for I mean you no harm. I come only to teach." Arrow Woman laid down her spear and began to relax, somehow knowing Uktena spoke truly.

Uktena told her to sit and to listen. Uktena dipped his head below the surface and came back up a moment later. In his mouth he had a strangely crooked stick and a leather pouch. These things he laid on the ground in front of Arrow Woman. Then the Great Uktena began to teach. He said,"This that I have laid before you is the Sacred Pipe of The Creator." He then told her to pick up the pipe. "The bowl is of the same red clay The Creator used to make your kind. The red clay is Woman kind and is from the Earth. Just as a woman bears the children and brings forth life, the bowl bears the sacred tobacco (tsula) and brings forth smoke. The stem is Man. Rigid and strong the stem is from the plant kingdom and like a man it supports the bowl just as man supports his family."

Uktena then showed Arrow Woman how to join the bowl to the stem saying, " Just as a man and a woman remain separate until joined in marriage so too are the bowl and stem separate. Never to be joined unless the pipe is used." Uktena then showed her how place the sacred tsula into the pipe and with an ember from the fire lit the tsula so it burned slightly. He told her this, "The smoke is the breath of The Creator, When you draw the smoke into your body, you will be cleansed and made whole. When the smoke leaves your mouth, it will rise to The Creator. Your prayers, your dreams, your hopes and desires will be taken to Him in the smoke. Also the truth in your soul will be shown to Him when you smoke the pipe. If you are not true, do not smoke the pipe. If your spirit is bad and you seek to deceive, do not smoke the pipe."

Uktena continued his lesson well into the night teaching Arrow Woman all of the prayers used with the pipe and all of the reasons for using the pipe. He finished just as the moon was beginning her nightly journey across the sky in search of her true love. He told Arrow Woman to wrap the pipe in cloth, keeping the parts separate. With this done He told her that she would never again be able to find this place but to remember all that she had learned. Uktena then returned to depths of the lake. Arrow Woman saw the water shimmer and become again the field of grass.
She left, taking with her the pipe and her lessons and a wondrous tale.

Ever since that time, The Ani Yun Wiya have used the sacred pipe and never again has any man seen the sacred lake of Uktena.

The pipe is not a symbol of things that are sacred. The pipe itself is sacred. Not everyone is called upon to be a pipe bearer. The person who carries the pipe and practices the pipe ceremonies and traditions has a great responsibility to his brothers and sisters, his land and country and even to the Earth Mother.

The pipe bearer does not 'own' the pipe he carries. He simply carries the pipe until the time comes for him to pass it to the next bearer. The pipe bearer is given certain powers of sight from the pipe as well as an ability to heal and purify. Should the bearer fall from grace and become a liar, thief, neglect his duties when asked, or become deceitful, the pipe would repossess these gifts and then the possibility of misfortune for the former bearer may exist.

One should be ready to accept the responsibility of the pipe for it may make demands upon you. It will become your teacher and guide. It can also be your worst enemy if used wrongly.
I leave it to you to decide if these words are truly said.
This is the way that I have learned.

  • Sad news......But not unexpected .

Just got a phone call from my sister Sue. My eldest sister Mary's husband Clarence has died. He was very sick and we all knew this was coming. He is now at peace and moving on to The Great Beyond.

  • Native American Legends

A new legend for the people

    A Cherokee Legend

Many, many years ago, when animals could talk, they were divided into tribes, bands and clans, much like we are today. The Hawks were some of the proudest of all animals. They were strong and great in number. Each year they would hold tribal councils and dances. The sound of their drum and wings would fill the Earth.

As time went on a great enemy came. A large and powerful bird which they had never seen before. When this bird would fly overhead, the whole sky would be as if it were night in the middle of the day. This bird passed over and caused many of the Hawks to be driven away from the land Grandfather had given them. He passed over again and caused many of the Hawks to die. Finally, he passed over and caused many of the Hawks to be separated from others into many different places. Over time, these separated Hawks lost all contact with their brothers and sisters. They began to live with the other birds; the red birds, the blue jays and others.

As time passed, the children of the separated Hawks grew up thinking they belonged with the other tribes. Sometimes their parents would even tell them they belonged there. Many years passed and the great, great grandchildren of the Hawks began to feel different from the other birds they had called family for so long. While the other birds wanted to search for worms, they wanted to soar in the air. When they saw game in the fields, they would be overcome with the desire to capture and eat it.

Slowly the separated Hawks began to know they were not the Red Birds or Blue Jays or any of the other birds they had been living with. Slowly they learned that they were Hawks and that there were other Hawks like them, living in other places. They learned of the Hawk Drums and Dances. These things stirred up the spirit of the Hawk inside them and they knew that they had to return to their families. One day all the separated Hawks got together and started out on the long journey home. After a long time, they reached the land of their Grandfathers. They found the other Hawks who had been left behind. This was the place they belonged and they knew it. Something inside told them so.

The Hawks who had been left behind were not interested in the new arrivals. "Who are you?", they asked. "What makes you think you are like us?" "We are Hawks", replied the new arrivals. "You may say you are Hawks but you are not part of us". Sadly, the separated Hawks left. They felt as if they had no other place to go, so they returned to the lands and tribes they had lived with for so long. The separated Hawks remembered the song of the Hawks they had learned and the dance they had seen. They began to sing the songs and dance the dances. Yet their hearts were heavy for their brothers and sisters.

One day the separated Hawks learned the old enemy of the Hawks had returned. He was once again making war with their brothers and sisters. Now however, the Hawks who had remained were smaller in number. The Hawks who had remained, it was learned, would most surely be destroyed this time by this great bird. The war cry went out among the separated Hawks. They gathered together. They made arrows, they fasted, they danced; they mad ready for war.

When the time was right, the separated Hawks set ambushes for the enemy of their fellow Hawks. The war was on. Because of the help of the separated Hawks, the enemy was defeated and all the Hawks once again lived together.

    ~ Tribal Wisdom ~

Cherokee blood is running through my veins
I'm proud to say this is so
A strong and powerful tribe was born
    Thousands of years ago.

A wonderful heritage I have discovered
    My great-great grandmother was Cherokee
Her knowledge of the earth was passed on down
Through generations and finally to me.

Such wisdom comes from all the tribes
Whether you're Hopi, Cheyenne, or Cherokee
So many lessons we could all learn
Pay attention, open your eyes, and see.

Our elders tell us the earth is crying
We've abused her and ravaged her so
She's trying to tell us to change our ways
Or we'll never see another rainbow.

All tribes are in tune with the spirits
And they live their lives accordingly
The spirits whisper into their ears
"Mother Earth forever holds the key."

Honor all the spirits of living things
Learn to respect the land on which you walk
Listen to the whisperings in the wind
You can hear them trying to talk.

  • Just a personal thought.

Reflecting on Ikwa’s posting on church and religion, I have some personal thoughts I would like to share.

Let me start by saying, I am not a personal fan of organized religion, so my opinions are my own. My thoughts and feelings on / about The Creator has come to me over many years of studying religions and religious beliefs, both pasted and present. My religious belief is in my heart and soul and as much a part of me as the air I breath. My Church is Nature and my closeness with The Creator is personal. How and what I believe in is my own and I don’t wish to offend anybody with my opinion.

The belief in a Creator God is in all religions, and the foundation of all religious beliefs. With that thought in mind as an analogy let us look at a tree. It starts out as a seed: the thought in a Creator God. From there the tree grows with the trunk as the foundation for all religions. The path the religion takes is the direction of the roots and branches, some growing apart from the original. Like the divisions in the major religions of the world. Those divisions can come about politically, by a difference of opinion, or conquest. The one thing I found in all organized religions is corruption, greed, hated, and bigotry. Not because the religion is wrong in its belief, but because of humans involved in running and participating in the religion. The religious elders set the direction and doctrine for that religion and from there the flaws come about. Not because of the religion in its truest form is flawed, but because mankind is. Those of us who have found the true path to The Creator have looked backward to the seed. Following the twists and turns in that backward journey. In that journey you find peace in your belief and a foundation to move forward again. The only problem with making that backward journey is that in doing so you will find that organized religion is flawed. Many prophets have tried to put their religions back on the true path, but in the end they failed. As time passes on the corruption, greed, hated, and bigotry overcomes the organized religion, again.

For those of you that question their organized religion, take heart that in questioning, you will find the path to happiness with your religious beliefs. You don’t need an organized religion to feel you belong to a particular religion. A church is just a building, not a religion. The real church is in the heart and soul of the people who believe in that religion and follow the true path of that religion.

  • Another Update on Me....

I finely took some time off from work. I spent the week finishing the back wall to the sewing room. I started that project in 2007, but every time I thought I would get time to finish the room some else came up and I had to change directions. I needed to empty the room to get the job done. Part of the room is used for our computer, so I had to remove it until I got the room done. No computer for a week! Boy, I am way behind on all my e-mail. The other problem with trying to get the room finished is that I work nightshift, so I sleep during the daytime, and I can't do the work at night. No loud noise between 10pm to 8am! Stupid city life! Now I have to try and get back to sleeping during daylight hours, again.

As far as work goes I’m still working nights. Don’t know when or if I will be going to second-shift. I have given up on that happening soon. One of the guys I work with also wants to see about changing shifts. I told the store manager that if he really wants to change shifts I’d stay on third. He is one of the reasons why I want to change shifts. We have tried putting him in every aisle of the store and he can’t get his numbers past 40 pieces an hour. The two oldest people in age (Gary and me) still out work the younger ones. Us old guys are getting tired of having to pick up the slack for the younger ones.

Other news.... The wife is now on Humira for her arthritis. She was supposed to get it in the pen form, but we didn’t know about that when we pick it up. What we got was regular needles. So we setup an appointment for training on how to use it. At that appointment is when we found out we were give the wrong style of injection system. She gets a shot ever two weeks. The cost for this is very expensive, without insurance it would cost over $2000.00, with our insurance about $549.00, with adding help from Humira it is going to cost us about $50.00 a month (two injections). Having Humira help with the medicine is some help towards the overall cost for her treatment. All the tests, and doctor appointments add up. Our social life is spent visiting doctors (hers and mine)! We are still trying to pay off my cancer treatments, now we are added this to our bills. We are trying to get a home equity loan to help us cover our bills. But, we need to get the roof done before we can get the loan. The only thing the roof needs is new asphalt tiles. One of the wife's children is willing to help us with getting the roof done. We have cut back on expenses as much as we can. Turned of the dish (TV), cut back on electric, heat and water. No extra trips with the car (work and doctors mostly), I do the shopping for food after work, before coming home. This is one reason why I’m not doing much online, keeping the computer turned off helps cut the electric bill. I need to have the internet to get my pay stubs, and the wife uses it to keep in touch with her children. So the computer is off most of the time. I even started using an oil lamp at night to read by. Yes, I’m spending more time reading on my nights off from work.

I know we will dig ourselves out of this debit but it is going to take some time. I’ll try and update and post comments when I get some free time. For now it will not be often. I miss all my friends here, but times are tough for us right now.

  • Update on Me....

Sorry, I haven’t had much time for being online lately. Just have a whole lot of stuff going on in my life right now, and I don’t really want to talk about it. Let me just say that things are not going as I would like them to. Oh well Life Goes On! Work sucks, personal and family problems taking their toll with my thoughts. I need to change things and get my mind into a better place, again! My problem and I know I will be able to work out things for the better, it is just going to take time. I also know that when I get like this my thoughts become fuddle and confusing. So when things get better I will be back.

  • A New Year....

    The True Peace

The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness, with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells Wakan-Taka (the Great Spirit), and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.

This is the real peace, and the others are but reflections of this. The second peace is that which is made between two individuals, and the third is that which is made between two nations. But above all you should understand that there can never be peace between nations until there is known that true peace, which, as I have often said, is within the souls of men.

"O Great Spirit whose voice I hear in the winds,
I come to you as one of your many children.
I need your strength and your wisdom.
Make me strong not to be superior to my brother,
but to be able to fight my greatest enemy:

  • My Son

This is great. Take a moment to read it; it will make your day. The ending will surprise you.

    Take my Son ...

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art.

When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands.

He said, 'Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your love for art.' The young man held out this package. 'I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.'

The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. 'Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift.'

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

The man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of his paintings. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having an opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. 'We will start the bidding with this picture of the son. Who will bid for this picture?'

    There was silence ...

Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, 'We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one.

But the auctioneer persisted. 'Will somebody bid for this painting? Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?'

Another voice angrily. 'We didn't come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Gogh's, the Rembrandts. Get on with the Real bids!'

But still the auctioneer continued. 'The son! The son! Who'll take the son?'

Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. 'I'll give $10 for the painting ...' Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.

'We have $10, who will bid $20?'

'Give it to him for $10. Let's see the masters.'

The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the picture of the son. They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections.

The auctioneer pounded the gavel. 'Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!'

A man sitting on the second row shouted, 'Now let's get on with the collection!'

The auctioneer laid down his gavel. 'I'm sorry, the auction is over.'

    'What about the paintings?'

'I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will ... I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of the son would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings.

The man who took the son gets everything!'

God gave His son over 2,000 years ago to die on the Cross. Much like the auctioneer, His message today is: 'The Son, the Son, who'll take the Son?'

Because, you see, whoever takes the Son gets everything!
